Asbestos was called the ‘Magic Mineral’ and was also referred to as ‘Canada’s Gold’.
Because of the needle-like fibres in asbestos, it had many uses. It was easy to manufacture into many different products. Its heat resistance made it ideal to be woven into fire resistant clothing, fire blankets etc. It also had excellent insulation properties so it was used extensively in building materials, pipes, roofing sheets, furnaces, fires etc. As well as what is already mentioned, it was also resistant to frost, heat, vermin and many corrosive elements. It was used in thousands of different applications. It was not until many decades later, it was discovered to be such a killer.
